Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has constituted a high-level committee to develop actionable proposals for the deregulation, reform, and potential privatization of Pakistan’s sugar sector.
The committee will be chaired by the Minister for Energy, with the Secretary of the Ministry of Industries and Production serving as convener. Other key members include the Finance Minister, the Minister for National Food Security and Research, and the Minister for Economic Affairs.
Additional members include the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries, former Secretary Rana Naseem, Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Agriculture and Food Security Ahmed Umar, and representatives from key federal ministries and provincial governments.
Under its terms of reference, the committee will conduct a comprehensive review of federal and provincial laws, rules, regulations, and policies governing sugar production, import and export, pricing mechanisms, subsidies, and anti-hoarding measures.
The committee will also develop policy recommendations addressing commodity stock management, price data reliability, protection of farmers’ interests, consumer rights, domestic market needs, and trade requirements.
It will engage with stakeholders, including industrialists, farmers, and regulators, to ensure a transparent and well-integrated privatization process. The committee is required to submit its final report to the Prime Minister within 30 days.
