NAB Disburses Billions to Victims of a Major Housing Scam

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Lahore has started disbursing Rs. 3.2 billion among the victims of the Eden Housing scam. The development marks the fifth installment in NAB’s recovery efforts related to the scandal.

During a cheque distribution ceremony held on Thursday, NAB Chairman retired Lt-Gen Nazir Ahmad shared that a total of 11,880 victims had submitted claims worth Rs. 13 billion.

However, NAB managed a plea bargain amounting to Rs. 16 billion — 23% more than the total claimed, ensuring higher compensation for the victims.

According to the chairman, NAB Lahore has so far recovered Rs. 11.8 billion from the Eden Housing authorities. Of this, Rs. 8.6 billion has already been distributed, with the current installment of Rs. 3.2 billion pushing the total disbursed amount further.

The remaining Rs. 4.2 billion is still being recovered.

In a major shift from previous procedures, victims will no longer have to visit NAB offices to receive payments. Compensation will now be transferred directly into their bank accounts through a digital system.

The NAB chairman praised the Lahore bureau and its investigation teams for their performance against illegal housing schemes. He stated that NAB had made record recoveries of Rs. 236 billion since its inception, with Rs. 233 billion disbursed among around 94,000 affectees.
