The National Assembly Standing Committee on Commerce on Monday discussed discrepancies in ridiculous vehicle import duties.
Committee member Shaista Pervaiz claimed small cars have become more expensive while large vehicles have become cheaper.
It was revealed that small vehicles (up to 850cc) face a 55 percent duty, while vehicles between 1300cc and 1800cc are taxed at 65 percent and 75 percent, respectively. Large vehicles continue to carry a 200 percent regulatory duty, although this was reduced by 90 percent under the new tariff policy and still stands at 50 percent.
Chairman Javed Hanif urged the government to consider lowering prices of small cars in the upcoming auto policy, highlighting the affordability issue for middle-income groups.
On gold jewelry exports, the committee was informed that a ban imposed in May through an FBR SRO is in place until June 30. However, Ministry of Commerce officials confirmed that a summary has been sent to the Prime Minister to lift the ban.
