India has decided to retire its MiG-21 fighter jets, bringing an end to more than six decades of service.
Indian media reports that a formal farewell ceremony for the aircraft will be held at the Chandigarh airbase on September 16. The MiG-21, which was once the mainstay of the Indian Air Force, became infamous over the years due to its high number of accidents.
Nicknamed the “flying coffin,” the jet has been linked to numerous crashes, resulting in the deaths of over 200 pilots.
Despite its troubled safety record, the MiG-21 played a significant role in several major military operations and continued to fly long after its original retirement date.
