Power Companies Overbilled Consumers by Rs. 244 Billion to Hide Losses

Eight electricity distribution companies overbilled consumers by Rs. 244 billion in 2023–24 to conceal line losses, inefficiencies, and theft, according to a report by the Auditor General of Pakistan.

The companies involved are IESCO, LESCO, HESCO, MEPCO, PESCO, QESCO, SEPCO, and TESCO, reported a news daily.

The audit found that five Discos overbilled 278,649 consumers by Rs. 47.81 billion in a single month. Overall, over 900 million excess units were charged to consumers during the year. No disciplinary action was taken against responsible officials.

Qesco was the largest offender, overbilling agricultural consumers by Rs. 148 billion primarily through inflated tube well charges.

An additional Rs. 22 billion was billed under “load adjustment” to mask technical losses. A total of 1,432 feeders issued inflated bills worth Rs. 18.64 billion, with audit teams denied access to related records.

Some refunds were issued, including Rs. 5.29 billion for incorrect meter readings and Rs2.18 billion in adjustments by Pesco. However, auditors said most refund claims lacked documentation.

    • pathan tum itna na socha kro demag phat jai ga or or or or bilkul phat jai ga

  • Then why were we told to blame solar users ?

Clearly over billing is done by companies not solar users.

And spineless journos never dare to ask about this

  • Weren’t we told by the electricity ministry that solar users are putting additional burden ?

    Ab kia Hua?

Turns out that over billing customers is the issue . Solar users only provide electricity at 19 rs per unit
And use the rest for their own homes

  • The power producing companies are free of any accountability there is no law for their accountability so far?

  • Nobody will care about this news item. Those in power who should have noticed this all will turn a blind eye and deaf ear to such a criminal act because electricity is free for them. The nation as a whole is sleeping. In any civilized country, this would have sent ripples in corridors of power. Here, nothing will happen. Nothing. Such is my beloved country and such it’s culture.

    • There are some reasons why 80% of people lost trust in govt including law enforcement agencies.

  • Briefly two things:
1- Govt organizations are/were involved in malpractices. You don’t need to be genius to work out what situation of other govt institutions will be.
2- Is this the only fraud that has been committed to suppress the inefficiency of govt.

  • But no power on earth can take action of overbilling companies, because these companies belongs to Pakistan mafia (DAKOOS).

  • 1) maybe an inquiry.
    2) if found guilty = suspension with paid leave + tour visa.
I love the news of circular debt of energy sector.
