The New Zealand government has eased its visa regulations in a strategic move to boost the national economy by attracting foreign investment. The changes introduce two new visa categories—the Growth Category and the Balanced Category, which will officially take effect on April 1, 2025.
Key Highlights of the New Investment Visa Policy
- Minimum Investment Structure: At least 75% of the total investment must be placed in listed equities (stock market) or bonds.
- A maximum of 25% of the investment can be held in New Zealand bank accounts (either in cash or term deposits). Previously, investors were allowed to keep up to 100% in bank accounts.
According to a report by Fragomen.com, the revised rules now also allow investors to put their money into property development companies, marking a significant expansion in investment options.
Once approved under the Active Investor Plus Visa, foreign investors will be granted indefinite residency in New Zealand. Additionally:
- The investment cap has been removed, and full payment of the investment amount is now mandatory upon approval.
- A new feature called “On-call Investments” has been introduced. It allows investors to temporarily place their funds in permitted assets such as bonds, term deposits, listed stocks, and bank accounts—before transferring them to managed investments.
More Benefits for Investors
- Newborn children of investors will now qualify for a Dependent Child Resident Visa, making them eligible for permanent residency.
- The English language requirement has been waived, making the program more accessible to non-English-speaking investors.
- Investors must complete the investment within 6 months of approval, with a possible 6-month extension upon request.
Applications must be submitted through the existing online application system, which is being updated to reflect the new policy. Full details are available on the official immigration website.
