Pakistan-born Dr. Adnan Hyder has been named as the new Dean of Boston University’s School of Public Health, following a comprehensive nationwide search.
Dr. Hyder, who began his medical journey at Aga Khan University in Pakistan, graduating with an MD in 1990, later continued his studies at Johns Hopkins University. There, he earned a Master of Public Health in 1993 and completed his PhD in 1998.
Since 2018, Dr. Hyder has held the roles of Professor of Global Health and Senior Associate Dean for Research and Innovation at the Milken Institute School of Public Health, George Washington University (GWU).
During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in strengthening the university’s research environment, launching initiatives such as the Research Support Team for Public Health & Law, reorganizing the Office of Research Excellence, and establishing the Office of PhD & MS Studies and online Summer Institutes.
He also secured significant NIH-Fogarty funding for global health training, marking a first for GWU’s public health school.
Dr. Hyder’s leadership extended to bioethics, research institutes, and mentorship programs, leaving a lasting impact on both faculty and students. Lynn R. Goldman, Dean of the Milken Institute SPH, praised Dr. Hyder’s contributions, expressing confidence in his future success at Boston University and extending heartfelt congratulations.
With a career spanning over 25 years, Dr. Hyder has dedicated himself to advancing public health in low- and middle-income countries across several continents.
He is recognized for his pioneering research on non-communicable diseases and injuries, exploring their epidemiology, risk factors, interventions, and policy implications, all through a strong bioethical perspective. His work has helped train thousands of health professionals worldwide.
Dr. Hyder is also a prolific author, having contributed to more than 400 peer-reviewed publications and numerous global reports on topics such as road safety, child injuries, and health systems.
He will officially assume his new role at Boston University on August 15, 2025.
