Safe City Cameras Will Now Track Sanitation in Lahore

The Punjab government has directed local waste management authorities to coordinate with the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) for real-time monitoring of sanitation operations in Lahore. The initiative is aimed at improving cleanliness through camera-based surveillance and faster reporting of unattended waste and violations.

Following the directive from the Secretary of Local Government, all waste management companies, including the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC), have been instructed to appoint dedicated representatives at the PSCA control center. These staff members will monitor live footage from the city’s surveillance network to track cleaning activity and report neglected areas.

The collaboration builds on an earlier agreement between PSCA and LWMC to integrate digital tools into daily sanitation enforcement. The partnership enables timely identification and response to garbage accumulation, illegal dumping, and non-compliance with cleaning schedules.

Safe City cameras have previously been deployed during high-demand periods such as Eid al-Adha. The system was used to monitor waste collection, animal waste disposal, and unauthorized use of public spaces. During the recent Eid operation, the government distributed over 3.2 million biodegradable bags and used the surveillance network to monitor canal cleanliness and enforce environmental rules.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif reviewed sanitation progress through live control room feeds and emphasized that camera oversight would continue to support future cleaning operations.

The Safe Cities program has been extended to 19 districts across Punjab, with a target of installing 5,000 cameras by mid-2025. While the network was originally designed for security and traffic management, its role has expanded to include environmental monitoring and municipal oversight.
