A consumer protection court in Karachi South took up a case on Tuesday regarding a private hotel’s ban on guests wearing shalwar kameez.
During the proceedings, legal representatives for the hotel appeared and filed a counter-petition, arguing that the case should be dismissed as inadmissible.
The court has requested both sides to present their arguments at the next hearing, which is scheduled for August 11.
Barrister Haseeb Jamali, representing the petitioner, noted that the hotel’s management had responded to the complaint but, instead of expressing regret, raised objections to the incident. He emphasized that while the hotel has the right to defend itself, imposing a ban on the national dress is unfortunate.
Advocate Latif Baloch, the petitioner, stated that a detailed response would be provided at the next hearing. He stressed that the issue goes beyond personal grievance, calling it a matter of respect for the country’s traditional attire.
The petition seeks both an apology and Rs10 million in compensation from the hotel, alleging that Latif Baloch was asked to leave the premises for wearing shalwar kameez.
