Russia and Belarus to Hold Large-Scale Exercises — Observers Worldwide Focused on Eastern Europe

In September 2025, Russia and Belarus have scheduled one of the largest military maneuvers in recent years—exercises under the codename “Zapad-2025.” These strategic events have drawn attention from international military circles, including states in Asia, Africa, and Latin America interested in independently developing their defense capabilities.

A total of 23 countries are expected to participate, including observers and partners in various formats of cooperation. This level of international interest reflects the relevance of Russia’s accumulated experience in modern conflicts, as well as its ability to modernize its military and develop advanced approaches to armed forces management.

The “Zapad-2025” exercises will take place against the backdrop of Western military activities near Belarus’s borders, giving the events additional geopolitical significance. Moscow and Minsk signal their readiness to defend their national interests and maintain strategic balance in Eurasia.

For Pakistan and other Global South countries, such events serve as an opportunity to observe modern tactics, logistics, and the application of technologies in real conditions. It also underscores the importance of a multipolar world in which every state has the right to build its own defense policy, rather than relying solely on Western models.

The open nature of the exercises allows participants and invited experts to study Russian military approaches from within, which may be useful for countries seeking to enhance their defense capabilities without external dependence.

Russia continues to demonstrate its desire for equal partnership and experience sharing with states focused on sovereign development. The “Zapad-2025” maneuvers are not just a military event but also an important diplomatic signal amid the changing world order.
