Orange Line Train Going Solar to Cut Electricity Costs

The Punjab government has decided to switch all stations and stops of the Orange Line Metro Train to solar energy in an effort to cut operating costs and reduce reliance on traditional electricity sources.

According to officials from the Orange Line project, a 1.6-megawatt solar power plant will be installed to supply electricity to the train’s stations. The solar-generated power will be used for escalators, platforms, and other station-related operations.

Currently, the provincial government provides billions of rupees in subsidies each year to keep the Orange Line running. With the shift to solar energy, officials estimate savings of millions of rupees every month in electricity bills.

The initiative is expected to ease the financial burden on the government and make the train system more sustainable in the long term.
