Sindh Announces Public Holiday

The Sindh government has announced a province-wide public holiday on August 9 to mark the Urs of the revered Sufi saint, Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai.

According to Sindh’s Secretary for Culture, Muhammad Khan, the 282nd annual Urs celebrations will commence on Saturday, and preparations for the three-day event are now complete.

He added that the Minister for Culture has extended an invitation to the Governor of Sindh to open the festivities officially. All relevant departments have been placed on high alert to ensure smooth proceedings during the Urs.

Additionally, authorities have imposed a ban on the public display of weapons in Hyderabad during the celebrations, with an official notification already issued.

Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai is celebrated as the greatest Sufi poet in the Sindhi language and is regarded as the national poet of Sindh. His magnum opus, the Shah Jo Risalo, is often compared to Rumi’s Mathnawi for its spiritual depth and poetic mastery. Bhittai’s poetry, which emphasizes love, tolerance, and mysticism, continues to inspire generations.

Each year, his Urs is observed on 14 Safar, the second month of the Islamic calendar, drawing devotees from across the province for three days of prayers, music, literary gatherings, and cultural festivities at his shrine. In recognition of his enduring legacy, a 16-foot statue of Bhittai was installed at Bhit Shah in 2017.
