Massive Salary Hike Proposed for Sindh Assembly Members

A new bill detailing revised salaries, allowances, and facilities for Sindh Assembly members has been finalized and will be tabled in the assembly today, ARY News reported.

If approved, the updated salary package will take effect from July 1, 2025, according to official sources.

The proposed legislation includes various perks for lawmakers, such as allowances for housing, utilities, medical care, transportation, and other benefits. It also grants the Leader of the Opposition the same entitlements as a provincial minister.

The bill calls for the establishment of a Parliamentary Committee tasked with making annual recommendations on salaries and benefits, which the provincial government would be legally required to implement. The committee’s chairperson would be provided with an official vehicle and a fuel allowance.

The draft law aims to replace the outdated 1974 legislation with a modern framework that aligns with practices in other provincial assemblies. It also stipulates that pay scales will be reviewed in comparison with other provinces, ensuring that any adjustments—whether increases or decreases—are based on the committee’s recommendations, which the government must adopt.

At the federal level, preparations are also underway for significant salary hikes for Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) and Senators. Sources indicate that MNAs’ monthly pay could rise by up to 200% from the current Rs. 1.68 lakh. This proposal, which has the backing of both coalition and opposition parties, will be presented in the National Assembly and Senate for approval.

In addition to lawmakers, ministers, and advisors, the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Chairman of the Senate are also set to benefit from substantial raises, with the latter two potentially seeing their monthly salaries increased to Rs. 15 lakh.
