The Punjab government has revealed plans to introduce a tram service in Lahore, set to begin operations in February next year.
Punjab’s Transport Minister, Bilal Akbar, shared that the initial tram trial was a success. As a result, the tram line connecting Thokar to Harbanspura is scheduled to launch in February 2026.
According to Bilal Akbar, each tram will be able to accommodate 270 passengers. The project is estimated to cost $3 million. He also mentioned that officials from Punjab NESPAK and the Punjab Mass Transit Authority recently traveled to China in connection with the project.
The minister added that metro train services are also being planned for Faisalabad and Gujranwala. The Faisalabad metro is expected to serve 300,000 commuters daily, while the Gujranwala metro aims to cater to 140,000 passengers each day.
He further stated that the Faisalabad Metro project is budgeted at $110 million, and the Gujranwala Metro will require $50 million.
Bilal Akbar emphasized that rising pollution from motorcycles and other vehicles in Lahore is a growing concern, and these new tram and metro initiatives are part of the government’s strategy to address environmental issues.

Punjab government should do something useful rather than playing dramas and fooling the people. Are there enough givernment-run hospitals and healthcare centres in Punjab? No. People are being forced to go to the butchers, called medical doctors who remove skin of the patients and empty their pockets. And remember the one shown in the picture is just a long bus, not a tram. After a couple of months, this long bus will disappear from the roads.
Launch date is too long but boisterous compaign was too early۔ Moreover، it’s maintenance plan should be brought to light otherwise these buses would be in scrap shape in few years like bus no 22
From Thoker to Harbanspura whose fleet was seen in Bilal Gunj Scrap Market in 2018۔
This would be a great initiative by the government of Punjab. The growing motorcycle rush disturbing the whole Lahore specially on canal road. Beside this issue the public transportation always be helpful for daily traveling.
I greatly appreciate this initiative.
How we can address pollution issues when number of bikes on lahore roads is increasing sharply bikers damage care to rules or pollution, there has to restrictions and need to limit them on certain roads otherwise we can go on adding various expensive transports without improving pollution we will increase congestion on roads making them diddifult to travel , in other words increasingly enviable increasingly un liveable.
