The Sindh government has announced that all government and private schools and colleges in Karachi will remain closed on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. The decision comes in response to widespread urban flooding and continuous rainfall that have disrupted daily life in several areas of the city.
The announcement was confirmed by Sindh Education Minister Sardar Shah, following recommendations from city authorities monitoring the impact of ongoing weather conditions.
Monsoon Rain Causes Severe Disruption
Heavy monsoon rainfall over the past 48 hours has caused significant water accumulation in major neighborhoods, including Gulistan-e-Johar, Korangi, Nazimabad, and Gulshan-e-Hadeed. Main roads such as Shahrah-e-Faisal, MA Jinnah Road, and University Road have experienced partial to full blockages due to floodwater.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, more rain is expected throughout the week, raising concerns about continued flooding and traffic hazards.
Response from City Authorities
City officials have launched drainage and relief operations to mitigate the impact of flooding. Authorities are using pumps and emergency response teams to clear blocked roads and restore access. In the meantime, they have advised the public to avoid non-essential travel and exercise caution near waterlogged areas.
Context and Public Safety
The temporary school closure is intended to prioritize student and staff safety. Several localities have reported power outages, road closures, and stalled vehicles, making daily commutes difficult and, in some cases, unsafe.
While educational institutions will remain shut for one day, further closures may be considered depending on the progression of weather conditions.
