A high-level meeting was held on Monday to review the proposed eco-friendly Elevated Expressway project in Lahore, designed to ease traffic congestion and provide convenience to daily commuters.
The four-lane expressway, planned from Gulberg to Babu Sabu along the city’s main stormwater drain, is expected to serve more than 70,000 passengers each day.
Officials said the route will cut travel time between Gulberg Main Boulevard and Motorway M-2 to just 10 minutes. The project also includes the construction of six major interchanges to ensure smooth connectivity.
Additional interchanges will link the expressway with the Metro Bus and Orange Line Metro Train routes, allowing public transport users to benefit directly. Authorities stressed that the expressway will not only relieve traffic pressure but also reduce carbon emissions, aligning with the government’s environment-friendly policies.
The meeting, presided over by Secretary Housing Noor ul Amin Mengal, also discussed proposals to relocate major city markets outside Lahore’s urban core and allocate land near the motorway for a new bus terminal connected to the expressway.
It was decided to establish the Lahore Traffic Decongestion Committee to supervise planning and implementation. On the instructions of the senior minister, a comprehensive Environmental Impact Study will be carried out before final approval.
The plan will then be presented to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. Senior officials from LDA, WASA Punjab, Nespak, and other departments attended the session.

This is pathetic. More roads, more and more roads, and wider roads, never solve the traffic problem.
The government can spend these billions of rupees to build water reservoirs and embankments on rivers to save from flooding but priorities!
