With reference to a news report concerning the Prime Minister’s Laptop Scheme, it is clarified that the laptops mentioned as “missing” under Phases I and II were not missing but unaccounted for in official records.
As per the established procedure, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) hands over laptops to universities, which are responsible for distributing them to eligible students strictly based on merit and in accordance with defined criteria.
Out of the 1,038 laptops highlighted in the report, the records for 895 have already been updated to confirm their delivery to students at various universities. The record for the remaining 143 laptops is currently being reconciled. The universities involved have been instructed to complete this reconciliation at the earliest, with the University of Karachi accounting for the highest number – 124 laptops – pending verification.
Universities have been directed to reconcile the outstanding data within one month; failing to do so will result in the recovery of the corresponding amount, which must be deposited into the Government Treasury.
