NDMA Issues Flood Alert: Lahore, Kasur, and Okara Among High-Risk Areas

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has sounded a fresh flood warning, cautioning that the Ravi River and its adjoining catchment areas could face severe flooding in the coming days.

According to the NDMA, heavy rainfall is forecast in the upper catchments of the Ravi between August 30 and September 3, while the release of water from Thein Dam may further swell the river’s flow. Current readings show a discharge of 147,000 cusecs at Balloki, with a flood wave expected to reach Sadhnai around September 2–3, potentially pushing flows to 125,000–150,000 cusecs. Officials warned that such levels could trigger a serious flood situation in Sadhnai.

Low-lying areas of Lahore and Raiwind are considered at risk, while nearby districts, including Kasur, Pattoki, Okara, Renala Khurd, and Depalpur, have also been identified as vulnerable. Other regions feared to be affected include Gogera, Tandlianwala, Kamalia, Pir Mahal, Adda Hakim, and Sadhnai.

Separately, the NDMA confirmed that water flow at Chiniot Bridge has surged to 855,500 cusecs, creating a severe flood condition there.

Meanwhile, authorities in Islamabad opened the spillways of Rawal Dam earlier today after persistent rainfall pushed the water level to the danger mark of 1,751 feet. The Assistant Commissioner of Nilore supervised the controlled release to prevent any overflow.

The NDMA has placed all relevant departments on high alert and directed them to take preventive measures. Citizens have been urged to remain cautious, avoid crossing the Korang Nullah or using temporary bridges during high discharge hours, and cooperate with emergency teams to ensure public safety.
