Australian Fast Bowling Star Calls Time on T20I Career

Australia’s T20I squad will lose one of its most important members, as Mitchell Starc has announced his decision to retire from the format with immediate effect.

The left‑arm pace spearhead has chosen to step away to focus on upcoming challenges in Test and ODI cricket.

The 35‑year‑old, who played 65 T20Is and claimed 79 wickets at an average of 23.81, was a central figure in Australia’s historic 2021 ICC T20 World Cup triumph in the UAE. Starc’s pace and partnership‑breaking ability made him one of the most feared bowlers in world cricket, with best T20I figures of 4 for 20 against the West Indies in 2022.

Explaining his decision, Mitchell Starc said:

“Test cricket is and has always been my highest priority. I have loved every minute of playing T20Is, especially the 2021 World Cup, but looking ahead at Australia’s Test schedule and the 2027 ODI World Cup, this is the best way for me to remain fresh and at my best.”

Australia’s red‑ball calendar from 2026 onward includes a packed lineup: a home series against Bangladesh, tough away tours to South Africa and India, a special 150th‑anniversary Test against England at the MCG, and an Ashes series in England. The 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia will cap a hectic period.

While stepping away from international T20s, Mitchell Starc intends to continue featuring in domestic T20 leagues, including the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Starc’s retirement opens international doors for emerging quicks as Australia look to maintain their cricketing dominance. Spencer Johnson, Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis, Riley Meredith, and Lance Morris all have a chance to make the vacant slot their own.

And while Mitchell Starc exits T20Is, rest assured batters are still not safe in ODIs and Tests from his searing pace. As he heads into the next chapter of his career, he will be remembered by Australian fans for his countless contributions to the T20 side.
