British Council and School Education & Literacy Department (SELD) Sindh Launch English as a Subject for Teachers & Educators (EaSTE) Programme in Sindh

The British Council and the School Education and Literacy Department (SELD), Government of Sindh, officially launched a large-scale teacher development programme at the Chief Minister’s House, setting in motion a partnership that will transform the way English is taught in public schools across the province.

The event opened with the Secretary SELD welcoming the audience and briefly outlining the objectives of the programme, emphasising the Government of Sindh’s commitment to strengthening teacher capacity and improving student learning outcomes.

Through this initiative, 30,000 newly recruited Primary School Teachers (PSTs) and Early Childhood Teachers (ECTs) will benefit from the British Council’s internationally recognised English as a Subject for Teachers and Educators (EaSTE) programme. The training will equip teachers with modern, inclusive, and multilingual teaching methods—ultimately improving learning outcomes for over 2 million children in Sindh’s classrooms.

The programme will also introduce a digital Learning Management System (LMS) to provide teachers with flexible, accessible professional development opportunities. In addition, 1,000 in-service teachers will be trained as mentors, building a sustainable system of peer support and continuous professional growth.

James Hampson, Country Director, British Council Pakistan said: “EaSTE II is investing in the future of over two million children. The British Council is proud to renew its partnership with the Sindh Government and support teachers to transform classrooms across the province.”

Murad Ali Shah, Chief Minister of Sindh said: “A child who learns a language well learns everything better. Language is the bridge to knowledge, not just a subject. That’s why the launch of EaSTE-II matters it’s about unlocking learning across all classrooms in Sindh.”

Sardar Ali Shah, Minister for Education, Government of Sindh said: “By empowering teachers, we enable students to thrive globally while staying connected to their culture. This inclusive program promotes equity by prioritising female, minority, and disabled teachers, and values local languages like Sindhi and Urdu alongside English essential for better learning and a stronger education system.”

Building on the proven success of EaSTE in Punjab this launch represents the next chapter in scaling innovative teacher development programmes across Pakistan. The letter of intent to take forward this partnership was earlier signed in June 2025.
