Govt to Replace Three-Phase Meters with Smart Meters Across Pakistan

The federal government has decided to gradually replace conventional three-phase electricity meters across the country with AMI smart meters in a bid to curb power theft and prevent overbilling.

According to the Ministry of Power Division, the phased plan will begin with the replacement of 350,000 meters under an initial business plan. A deadline of December 2026 has been set for the complete switch to smart meters nationwide.

A formal directive has been issued to all distribution companies, including Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO). In the first phase, LESCO alone will replace 350,000 meters, with installation carried out under the meter replacement order.

Officials said that the smart meters will help ensure greater accuracy in billing and monitoring, while also reducing electricity theft. However, they acknowledged that LESCO will have to bear billions of rupees in costs for the large-scale installation.

  • 350000 meters are already paying 1000 + 18 %gst for using nothing providing amounting to 40 crores and 4.8 billion in one year.
nothing can be done in system where kutee choron say mile ho

  • But good decision. It was inevitable eventually. Everyone can then decide to add solar panels without lengthy process and enjoy net metering

  • جن لوگوں نے ڈائریکٹ کنڈے لگائے ہوئے ہیں اس کو یہ کیسے روکیں گے بجلی چوری کرنے سے

  • This is another exploitation step by the Federal Government to burden the public with new meters expense, which is already labouring under heavy electricity bills. The government leaves no stone unturned to panic the public. One day, it announces decline in solar power (supplied to the grid) rates and now this news of smart meters. Are existing three phase meters not functioning properly, and if the answer is in negative, then what’s the need for new meters. Some blue eyed has to be favoured by such a move, nothing else!

    • You are not living where Iiving, in my area, this will reduce or eliminate electricity theft and non payment

  • Does this meter have ability to connect with user mobile, so they can meet monitor and manage their usage, if yes that’s good, otherwise waste of time and money.

  • Remove inner black sheep’s that facilitate kundas or theft in urban areas besides rural recovery issue…. Changing meters to smart will not change anything but add on cost that consumers will bear anyway…
