Education. Education is the most neglected area, and i’m not talking about just number of schools but also the stuff they teach there. The requirement is to build schools and keep them running. The government allocate funds and then no follow up, the outcome is corruption and a low standard school or even no school. The education ministry has no vision and no direction. Although allocated funds are less but most of that is wasted in aimless projects and corruption. And then there is the curriculum, there is no standard curriculum at all. Schools teach whatever they like and how they like, especially the private schools. The curriculum needs to revised and standardized, elimination of english-medium and urdu-medium education system has divided the society for a long time and needs to be abolished. One core curriculum with an additional optional curriculum must be defined, standardized and enforced by the government. Teacher training programs needs a lot of improvement also.
Law Enforcement. Pakistan is a country where common man avoids police interaction and political elite uses them as personal servants. The requirement of elaborate police reforms is urgent and of utmost importance in this country. Police and other law enforcement and investigation agencies needs de-politicization. The desire of politicians to control police is always there but needs to be curbed through good legislation. They must be allowed to work independently and should function under local elected government instead of provincial gov’t.
Local Government. Local Government system has never worked for the political elite of Pakistan. Unfortunately the reality is that every military dictator held elections for local governments and empowered them but every democratic government either didn’t hold local government elections or if held the elected governments were never empowered. The local government system needs to be strengthened and to transfer power to grass root level.
