Tandoor Owners Warn of Naan and Roti Price Hike Amid Rising Flour Cost

Naanbai associations have warned of a steep hike in roti and naan prices if flour is not supplied at the government’s controlled rates.

The body representing bakers has demanded a continuous and adequate supply of flour at official prices, cautioning that failure to meet this demand would push roti prices to Rs25 and naan to Rs30.

Representatives noted that flour costs have risen by nearly 70% in the past two weeks. If corrective measures are not taken, they announced plans to stage nationwide protests.

Market insiders recently highlighted a sharp surge in wheat prices, with rates in Punjab jumping from Rs2,200 to Rs2,800 per maund, raising fears of further inflationary pressure.

Already, the cost of a 20kg flour bag has gone up by Rs 100. Following this increase, naanbais had earlier hinted at a Rs2 rise in roti prices.

In the twin cities and surrounding areas, authorities have also imposed a ban on the sale of 15kg flour bags amid escalating prices. Flour mills are currently charging Rs2,400 for a 20kg bag, whereas the government has set the official retail price at Rs1,810. Similarly, a 10kg bag is being sold for Rs 1,200, far above the notified rate of Rs 905.

Meanwhile, the cost of fine flour has seen a drastic surge, with an 80kg sack now priced at Rs10,500 compared to Rs7,000 previously.
