Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz Announces Huge Financial Aid for Flood Victims

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced financial assistance to support the reconstruction of homes damaged by recent floods across the province. Speaking at the inauguration of electric buses in Sargodha, CM Nawaz revealed that families whose homes were destroyed would receive Rs. 1 million each, while those with partially damaged homes would be provided Rs. 500,000 for repairs.

In addition to home reconstruction, the Chief Minister announced compensation for owners of livestock lost in the floods. Affected individuals will receive between Rs. 200,000 and Rs. 500,000. CM Nawaz confirmed that cheques for these compensations would be distributed within the next five days.

Scale of the Flood Damage

CM Nawaz highlighted the extensive damage caused by the floods, which affected 27 cities and more than 5,000 villages. She emphasized that the swift response of the Punjab government had significantly reduced the potential loss of life.

Ongoing Relief Efforts

The Chief Minister further shared that relief operations had successfully evacuated 2.5 million people to safer locations. Alongside evacuations, food and other essential supplies were provided to those in need. Additionally, livestock were also safely relocated to protect the livelihoods of affected families.

The floods of 2025, caused by relentless monsoon rains, flash floods, and glacial lake outbursts, have claimed over 800 lives and affected more than 1.2 million people. The devastation has led to widespread infrastructure damage and a deepening economic crisis, with losses estimated at $50 billion.

Earlier in August, CM Nawaz acknowledged the coordinated efforts of administrative departments, rescue teams, and the Pakistan Army, praising them for their role in conducting what she referred to as the “largest rescue operation in the history of Pakistan.” She also noted that over 600,000 people and 450,000 livestock were safely evacuated during the heavy monsoon rains and the release of floodwaters by India.
