Sindh Announces Age Limits For Different Routes and Vehicles

The Sindh government has officially amended the Sindh Motor Vehicle Rules 1969 to tighten road safety and traffic regulations. A new notification sets strict age limits for vehicles operating on different routes, while also making fitness certificates and modern safety systems mandatory.

Age Limits for Vehicles

Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon explained that vehicles will now face specific age restrictions depending on the routes they operate on:

  • Inter-provincial routes: No permits will be issued to vehicles older than 20 years.
  • Intercity routes: Vehicles over 25 years old will no longer be allowed to operate.
  • Within cities: The maximum age limit has been set at 35 years.

Memon stressed that these limits will help improve road safety and reduce accidents caused by outdated and unsafe vehicles.

Mandatory Fitness and Safety Checks

Under the new rules, all heavy commercial vehicles must obtain a fitness certificate from the transport department centers. Violators will face heavy fines, which will be deposited directly into the Sindh government’s online account.

Every vehicle must also pass a road-worthiness test. Penalties for failing to comply include:

  • First violation: Small fine
  • Second violation: Rs. 200,000 fine
  • Third violation: Up to Rs. 300,000 fine

Tracking and Safety Systems

The amendments also make it compulsory for both heavy and light commercial vehicles to be equipped with modern safety systems, including:

  • GPS tracking devices
  • Front and rear cameras
  • Driver-monitoring cameras
  • 360-degree camera system
  • Under-run protection guards (to protect smaller vehicles and motorbikes during accidents)

If these systems are missing or deliberately disabled, the vehicle will be temporarily seized. Owners will have 14 days to fix the issue, or the registration will be permanently canceled.

One-Year Transition Period

The law will take effect within one year, giving vehicle owners time to adjust and comply with the new standards.

    3. The implementation of easily identifiable, unique codes on vehicle exteriors, adjacent to the registration number, to streamline reporting to traffic authorities.
