OpenAI has announced new restrictions on the use of ChatGPT for users under 18, introducing stricter safeguards and parental oversight tools. The move follows growing concerns about how artificial intelligence interacts with younger audiences, especially on sensitive issues.
Under the new rules, ChatGPT will adopt a more cautious approach when engaging in conversations with teenagers. The system will restrict or avoid discussions involving suicide, self-harm, or sexually explicit content. It will also refuse to participate in any form of romantic or flirty exchanges with minors.
New Parental Controls
To strengthen oversight, OpenAI is introducing parental control features. Parents will be able to:
- Set blackout hours to limit the times when children can access ChatGPT.
- Link their accounts to their child’s, creating greater visibility into use.
- Receive alerts if the system detects signs of severe emotional distress.
These measures aim to give families more control over the role AI plays in children’s daily lives.
Chief Executive Sam Altman explained that the company’s guiding principle is to place safety ahead of freedom or privacy when designing protections for minors.
The policy shift comes amid heightened public scrutiny and legal pressure. In recent months, lawmakers, parents, and advocacy groups have raised concerns about the potential impact of AI chatbots on teenage mental health. A high-profile lawsuit in the United States has further intensified calls for stronger guardrails.
