The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has approved the launch of a comprehensive Water Metering Project aimed at overhauling Islamabad’s water supply system through smart monitoring and improved management.
The decision was finalized during a meeting of the Islamabad Water Agency, chaired by CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa, where officials reviewed strategies to enhance efficiency and transparency in the city’s water services.
According to the CDA, the initiative seeks to reduce wastage, improve water conservation, and introduce a fair and transparent billing system for residents.
The meeting was attended by Member Planning and Design Dr. Khalid Hafiz, DG Islamabad Water, DG Planning and Development, and representatives from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Pakistan Telecommunications Infrastructure Authority (PTIA).
Chairman Randhawa said that the authority would engage expert consultants to design and install a state-of-the-art metering system across Islamabad.
“The Water Metering Project marks a major milestone for the city. It will modernize water management, promote accountability, and help preserve this vital resource,” he said.
The discussion also covered several related initiatives, including plans to shift all tube wells and electrical systems to solar power, install energy-efficient pumping units, and upgrade the sewerage network. However, officials agreed that introducing the metering system would be the immediate focus.
Randhawa emphasized that the CDA’s broader vision is to adopt sustainable solutions that ensure a clean and uninterrupted water supply for Islamabad’s growing population.
“Water is essential for life and development. Every drop counts, and this project will help us use it responsibly,” he added.
The Water Metering Project is expected to minimize distribution losses, prevent misuse, and bring Islamabad’s water infrastructure in line with modern urban management standards.
