Water Supply Suspension Announced for Karachi Amid Pipeline Repair

Repair work is underway on Karachi’s K-2 water line at the North East Pumping Station after a major leakage disrupted one of the city’s main 48-inch-diameter supply lines, officials from the Karachi Water Corporation (KWC) confirmed on Tuesday.

According to the KWC spokesperson, maintenance teams are working around the clock to fix the damaged section of the line and replace critical valves to prevent future breakdowns. “The repair is being carried out on an emergency basis in 24-hour shifts to restore the water supply at the earliest,” the spokesperson said.

As part of the repair operation, three of the eleven pumps at the K-2 station and one pump at Dhabeji Pumping Station have been temporarily shut down. This partial closure is expected to cut Karachi’s daily water supply by around 150 million gallons per day (MGD).

Several neighbourhoods, including Gulberg, Liaquatabad, North Nazimabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, and parts of Safora, are likely to experience temporary water shortages during the repair period.

Despite the disruption, KWC assured residents that approximately 500 MGD of water will continue to flow from alternate sources. The corporation also urged citizens to store water in advance and use it carefully until full supply is restored.

The city’s water crisis has once again drawn political attention. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari recently pressed for swift action, urging Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to deliver on his commitment to address Karachi’s chronic water shortages with what he called “Shehbaz Speed.”

Speaking at the inauguration of the new Hub Canal, Bilawal emphasized the need for joint efforts between federal and provincial authorities to provide clean and sufficient water to Karachi. “We are prioritizing water projects and treatment plants that will also ensure an adequate supply to the industrial sector,” he said.
