Motorists in Dubai could soon experience a new era of high-speed underground travel, as the long-anticipated ‘Dubai Loop’ project is expected to become operational as early as next year, Bloomberg reported on Monday, citing Omar Sultan Al Olama, UAE Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications.
The Dubai Loop, announced earlier this year by Elon Musk, the American billionaire and founder of The Boring Company, is envisioned as a 17-kilometre underground transport system designed to carry over 20,000 passengers per hour through 11 high-speed stations. The system promises to be fast, efficient, and weather-resilient — a key innovation in urban mobility for the city.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and The Boring Company formalized their partnership in February during the World Government Summit (WGS), marking a major step toward integrating advanced tunneling and transit technologies into Dubai’s infrastructure.
During his virtual appearance at WGS, Musk pledged to “transform the transportation sector by constructing safe, fast, and cost-efficient tunnels for passenger transit, utilities, and freight.”

A leap forward in mobility
The Dubai Loop project aims to revolutionize urban transportation by allowing commuters to travel directly to their destinations without intermediate stops, drastically cutting travel time.
According to the RTA, the tunneling technology behind the system will ensure rapid construction at lower costs compared to traditional methods, while minimizing disruption to existing road networks.
Experts believe the system could significantly reduce road congestion, one of Dubai’s persistent urban challenges. “By shifting commuters from private vehicles to a reliable underground network, congestion on surface roads can be greatly alleviated,” said Dr. Ahmed Al Mulla, co-founder of UAE-based consultancy firm Arkat, in an earlier interview with Khaleej Times.
However, Al Mulla emphasized that the project’s success will depend on strategic station placement and connectivity. “Dubai Loop must link high-demand zones, remain easily accessible, and seamlessly connect with Dubai Metro, Etihad Rail, and other transport systems,” he added.
Pioneering the future of smart transport
Part of Dubai’s broader vision for intelligent and sustainable mobility, the Loop represents a major milestone in the emirate’s long-term plan to expand its tunnel-based transport infrastructure.
If completed on schedule, Dubai will become the first city outside the United States to operate a Loop system — positioning it as a global pioneer in next-generation urban transit.
