The National Highway and Motorway Police (NH&MP) on Thursday announced the reopening of the Sukkur–Multan Motorway (M-5), which had been closed for several weeks following severe flood damage in southern Punjab.
Traffic on the motorway was suspended between the Jhangra and Jalalpur Pirwala interchanges after high floods in the Sutlej River inundated parts of Jalalpur Pirwala, Lodhran, and Uch Sharif on September 17.
The floods severely damaged a four-kilometre stretch of the motorway, forcing authorities to shut down a 14-kilometre section for safety. According to officials, repair work has now been completed, and traffic has resumed with a temporary four-kilometre diversion in place for all vehicle types.
The National Highway Authority (NHA) has urged motorists to strictly follow the diversion signs and instructions displayed along the route while travelling between Sukkur and Multan.
Authorities said efforts are underway to fully restore the remaining damaged portion of the motorway to ensure safer and smoother travel in the coming weeks.
