MNAs Declare PIA Tickets as Overpriced

Members of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Government Assurances expressed strong anger over the recent hike in Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) fares.

The committee meeting, chaired by Senator Nuzhat Sadiq, was attended by officials from the ministries of energy, communications, information, and parliamentary affairs. The agenda included discussions on gas supply, LPG cylinder standards, and high toll rates on motorways.

During the session, lawmakers criticized PIA for its soaring ticket prices. MNA Shagufta Jumani remarked, “A one-way PIA ticket from Karachi to Islamabad now costs no less than Rs. 60,000. If I’m wrong, other Karachi members can confirm it. I’ve stopped traveling with PIA because I simply can’t afford it anymore.”

Responding to the criticism, PIA officials claimed that the average fare between Karachi and Islamabad ranges between Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 27,000.

The committee also voiced concern over the lack of medical facilities on motorways. Chairperson Nuzhat Sadiq noted that even basic medicines are unavailable during emergencies, stressing that at least life-saving drugs should be provided at service counters. She directed the relevant authorities to take immediate action.

In addition, members questioned the National Highway Authority (NHA) over its responsibilities and the use of toll tax revenue. Lawmakers argued that if the public is paying toll fees, then ensuring proper facilities on motorways is NHA’s duty.

The committee demanded a detailed explanation from NHA regarding its revenue, contracts, and pricing discrepancies.
