A new chapter in motorsport is unfolding in the UAE, where the world’s first fully autonomous Formula One race car is ready to take to the track without a human driver in sight.
The Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC) of Abu Dhabi has introduced the EAV-25, a high-speed, AI-powered F1 car valued at $25 million, marking a significant leap for both automotive innovation and artificial intelligence.
Futuristic Design Meets High-Tech Engineering
The EAV-25 stands out with its unique design, its front styled after a hammerhead shark with a distinctive T-shaped nose. While a typical Formula One car costs between $12 million and $15 million, this AI-driven model’s price tag reflects advanced engineering: the steering wheel alone costs about $50,000, and its aerodynamic wings are valued up to $500,000.
Despite its futuristic technology, the EAV-25 runs on traditional petrol fuel. It is built with advanced sensor technologies, fast mobility stacks, and edge computing capabilities. Every aspect of the car is designed to function without human intervention, with onboard AI processing real-time data and making decisions in milliseconds during a race.
Racing Without a Driver
There’s no cockpit for a driver in the EAV-25. The car uses sophisticated algorithms modeled after data from legendary F1 racers such as Lewis Hamilton to learn optimal racing strategies, speed patterns, and overtaking maneuvers. According to Sultan Al Ali, vice president of Group 63, the system can process a million calculations per second to determine the fastest path around the track and how to react in critical race situations.
Khalid Al Mulla, president of the Mercedes-Benz AMG club Group 63, said that the EAV-25 can reach speeds of up to 370 km/h, outperforming some conventional F1 vehicles. The development cost runs into millions, reflecting both the car’s technological complexity and its position at the forefront of autonomous racing.
Global Stage Debut at Yas Marina
The EAV-25 is currently on display at the Evolve Future Mobility Show at Expo Centre Sharjah. Next month, 22 of these AI-powered vehicles will compete in the inaugural Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League at Yas Marina Circuit on November 15. The event will feature a prize pool of $2.25 million and is expected to attract thousands of spectators.
Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit has been a fixture on the Formula One calendar since its debut in 2009 and remains central to the region’s motorsport identity. The circuit also played a prominent role in the filming of “F1: The Movie,” bringing international attention to the UAE’s racing scene.
