The Pakistan Academy of Engineering (PAE) has proposed the construction of Karachi’s first underground railway network, describing it as a long term solution to the city’s growing transportation and traffic challenges.
The proposal was presented during the academy’s 40th Symposium, titled Importance of Underground Mobility in a Megacity, where transport and engineering experts from Pakistan, the United States and China reviewed successful underground rail systems operating in cities including Singapore, New York, Washington DC, Delhi, Friedberg and Dhaka.
Following the discussions, participants unanimously recommended the development of two underground railway corridors in Karachi. The proposed routes include one from Numaish Chowrangi to Merewether Tower and another from FTC on Sharea Faisal to I.I. Chundrigar Road and Tower.
PAE President Prof. Dr. Brig. (retd.) Nasim Akhtar Khan said Karachi’s growing population and increasing transport demand require long term infrastructure planning. He emphasized that underground rail transit offers a sustainable solution for the city’s future mobility needs.
According to the academy, the proposed underground railway would complement Karachi’s existing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network, creating an integrated public transport system capable of serving significantly more passengers.
Experts at the symposium said the project could help reduce traffic congestion, improve connectivity between commercial and residential areas, lower pollution levels and provide a safer and more reliable mode of transportation for millions of commuters.

Karachi does not need any metro project … it just need buses .. straight from malir cannt to numaish .. straight from quaidabad to metropole or i i chundigar .. straight from lee market to teen hatti and then shaheed e millat … from drigg road to nagan and from karsaz to gulby … only buses and plan … nothing more … 50% of the traffic will reduce …

Karachi is literally the largest city in the world right now without a mass transit rail system. city’s roads are already crowded for more busses. we need rail system with proper parking spaces at stations so that ppl dont use more cars or busses reducing congestion on roads.
Why first existing infrastructure of railway not to be revamped instead go on to new fancy project development?
FTC onwards is Red zone. They aren’t allowing overhead pedestrian bridge what of underground railroad. But again looking at cost of relocating underground utilities on university road that’s a big risk.
All that Planning of today was required in 1950s.

Allah ke waste, please don’t initiate such type of projects for Karachi to make it further horrible city. Only provide some decent bus transport and roads. Nothing else. For God sake no more such projects.
Not a bad idea indeed. But if intentions are bad then it will also be treated as Circular Railway for which financial assistance was promised by a rich country but nothing happened as yet. For underground railway network, budget will be allocated and highly paid staff will also be appointed on recommendation basis not on merit but no body knows except Allah that when this project will start & when will it be finished without revising initial budget for it.
May be the people who are suggesting the under ground railway the didn’t see the work of bus rout at the Univesity Road…..
Before you start this project please finish the red and yellow line brt project which has already turned some of Karachi’s main roads into major problem for commuters.
