Asif Afridi Creates Test History With a Five-Wicket Haul on Debut

Pakistan’s left-arm spinner Asif Afridi has written a new chapter in cricket history and this time, it’s not about his age, but his bowling brilliance.

With South Africa managing to keep Noman Ali and Sajid Khan quiet in Rawalpindi, it was Asif Afridi who stepped up, claiming a sensational five-wicket haul on debut. Those wickets helped him shatter a record that had stood untouched for 92 years.

Asif Afridi is now the oldest bowler to take a five-wicket haul on Test debut. According to the stats provided by Faizan Lakhani, the previous record-holder was England’s Charles Marriott, who achieved the feat against the West Indies at The Oval in 1933 at the age of 37 years and 332 days. Asif, at 38 years and 301 days, now holds the crown.

The Khyber-born spinner joins an elite club of just four cricketers over the age of 35 to take a five-for in their first Test. The others include Hines Johnson of the West Indies (1948), D.W. Carr of England (1909), and Pakistan’s own Nauman Ali, who did it at 34.

Asif’s victims included the dangerous Tristan Stubbs, Tony de Zorzi, Dewald Brevis, Kyle Verreynne, and Simon Harmer a lineup packed with firepower.

His five-wicket haul not only put Pakistan in a commanding position but also reignited hope among fans who’ve long championed the cause of seasoned domestic performers getting their moment on the big stage.

At nearly 39, Asif Afridi’s debut will be remembered not just for the record he broke  but for proving that in cricket, it’s never too late to make history.
