The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is on the brink of its most significant expansion yet, with two new franchises set to join the tournament ahead of its 11th edition, expected to be held in April-May next year.
According to sources, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is in the final stages of planning the inclusion process for the new teams, including the framework for ownership and franchise rights.
While the PCB has long expressed its ambition to expand the PSL, the momentum picked up following the conclusion of the 10th season. The board officially initiated the process of evaluating the market value of potential new franchises, a key step in paving the way for new ownership. With the league-wide valuation nearing completion, the PCB is now close to finalizing the sale mechanism for the incoming teams.
Insiders reveal that the PCB is leaning toward an open auction model, where the highest bidders will secure franchise rights. The successful parties will also be granted the liberty to choose team names and designate home cities from a pre-approved list curated by the board.
The PSL kicked off in 2016 with five founding teams — Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Peshawar Zalmi, and Quetta Gladiators. Multan Sultans joined the fray in 2018, rounding out the current six-team format that has become a cornerstone of Pakistan’s cricketing calendar.
The league’s expansion has been a recurring topic within the PCB, particularly the desire to broaden its footprint beyond the traditional hubs of Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Peshawar. With two new franchises on the horizon, cities like Faisalabad, Hyderabad, and Sialkot are strong contenders to finally earn their place on the PSL map, a move that could further embed the league into the national sporting fabric.
For cricket fans across Pakistan, the arrival of two new teams means more than just additional fixtures, it signals the birth of fresh rivalries, the rise of new heroes, and a renewed chance for long-overlooked cities to bask in the PSL spotlight.
