Pakistan has a history of sidelining its niche sporting heroes, and the latest example is record-breaking mountaineer Shehroze Kashif, who has once again voiced his frustration over what he calls the government’s broken promises and lack of support, despite his monumental achievements for the country.
The 23-year-old climber, who has raised Pakistan’s flag atop all 14 of the world’s 8,000-metre peaks, revealed he is now deep in debt and struggling financially after the government failed to follow through on promised funds.
Taking to X, Shehroze shared that he had to sell his land and car to finance his expeditions, accusing the authorities of abandoning their repeated commitments.
“My government promised support, but all was forgotten. I sold my land, my car, and remain in debt from past expeditions. How can you do this to someone who raised Pakistan’s flag on all 14 eight-thousanders?”
Despite being awarded the Hilal-e-Imtiaz earlier this year, Shehroze said no cash reward or official support has materialized. He tagged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, and Federal Minister Attaullah Tarar, urging them to take notice of his situation.
In an interview with Geo, Shehroze Kashif revealed that his mountaineering career has cost him over Rs. 40 million, all self-funded.
“Every rupee came from my own pocket or loans. I’ve done this to make Pakistan proud, not for fame,” he said.
This isn’t the first time Shehroze Kashif has voiced his disappointment. Back in 2022, he raised similar concerns over the lack of institutional backing, despite the global recognition and records he brought home.
Now, he warns that if things don’t change, he may be forced to leave Pakistan to pursue his career elsewhere.
“I’ve done everything I could for this country, but the system doesn’t value athletes who make it proud,” he said.
Shehroze’s words have struck a chord once again, reigniting debate over how Pakistan treats its athletes beyond cricket, especially those who bring global glory with limited means and zero support.
