The construction of a new convention center in Islamabad is set to begin soon after Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi instructed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to start work without delay.
Chairing a high-level meeting to review ongoing and upcoming development projects, Minister Naqvi was briefed that the CDA had received 16 design proposals for the new facility.
Officials said a jury will shortlist and finalize the best design, after which tenders will be issued to formally launch the construction process.
The new convention center will be built adjacent to the existing Jinnah Convention Centre, which currently spans 7.59 acres, including 4.13 acres of constructed area.
Officials highlighted that while several past administrations attempted to privatize the Jinnah Convention Centre, those efforts did not succeed.
Instead, the current government has decided to construct a modern, state-of-the-art convention center to host major international events, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit scheduled for 2027.
According to sources, Minister Naqvi directed the CDA to fast-track all preparations and ensure the timely completion of the project well before the summit, emphasizing that the new convention center will reflect Islamabad’s growing stature as a diplomatic and event hub.
