Official Inquiry Report Dismisses SP Adeel Akbar’s Death as Suicide

The inquiry committee formed to investigate the death of Superintendent of Police (SP) Adeel Akbar has reportedly found no evidence indicating suicide, according to sources cited by ARY News on Thursday.

The three-member committee, led by DIG Muhammad Haroon Joya with DIG Atiq Tahir and DIG Operations Jawad Tariq as members, finalized its report after reviewing the postmortem results and recording statements from SP Akbar’s driver, wireless operator, and other staff members.

The postmortem report confirmed that SP Adeel Akbar died from a gunshot wound to the face, but investigators could not establish that it was a case of self-inflicted harm. As part of the inquiry, a psychologist’s statement was also recorded to assess the officer’s mental health. It was revealed that SP Akbar had consulted his doctor twice shortly before his death.

Sources, quoted by ARY News, said the committee’s findings would be submitted to Inspector General (IG) Islamabad Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, who will forward them—along with his recommendations—to Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi for further action.

Earlier, a postmortem at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) confirmed the officer was struck by a single bullet fired from the front.

Reports suggest that SP Adeel Akbar had been battling depression linked to professional stress and had recently sought psychiatric help with his wife and daughter. He was also diagnosed with dengue fever a day before his death. The psychiatrist had advised him to continue his medication and remain calm, noting his growing frustration with official duties.
