The Punjab Excise Department has proposed replacing number plates for large SUVs, citing visibility issues with the current design. According to officials, small plates installed on bigger vehicles make registration numbers difficult to read.
Additional Director General of Excise, Rizwan Shirani, has instructed the creation of a new design specifically for large vehicles. He also suggested introducing color-based number plates instead of the traditional black-and-white format to improve clarity and identification.
The new design will be developed with consideration for Safe City cameras and enhanced security features. Excise officials said that once the design receives approval, formal procedures for implementation will begin.
Meanwhile, Lahore has once again topped the list of the world’s most polluted cities, raising concerns about air quality in the provincial capital.

I didn’t think changing the design, colour etc of vehicles number plates will make any difference rather it will be a total waste public funds. Safe city cameras should be brought in working condition and vehicles violating traffic rules should be challaned and fined through camera. Traffic violators will automatically come on line.
How can the cameras catch them when half of the vehicles on the road don’t even have a visable number plates and the other half have many different designs and formats. Why not learn from other countries and keep it simple. Suck as UK or even better Ireland. Ireland number plates represents city of registration, year of registration and the vehicle number such as. 124-D-25 what this means the car was registered in 2025 in Dublin and car number is 24 and registered month is January. Another example 7777-C-20 car registered in 2020 in Cork the car number is 777 and the month is July. What a cleaver, simple and a beautiful system. People make fun of Irish as being stupid 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I have four amber=yellow accessory lights installed on the front bumper of my car which are pointing downwards (only during fog season). Two on the right side illuminate the divider on the road while the two on the left side illuminate the edge of the matelled road. They donot point on to the oncoming traffic as most of the arrogant car drivers practice at night. Traffic police fined me for putting these foglights which help me drive safely during thick fog. I am a doctor by profession and I need to attend to the emergencies even during thick fog. Can government provide us (who belong to the essential services) with special number plates so that traffic police does not stop us and waste valuable time?
