Microsoft has launched its first internally developed image-generation model, MAI-Image-1, making it available through Bing Image Creator and Copilot Audio Expressions. The model, first announced in October, is now live and is expected to reach more regions soon.
Microsoft’s head of AI, Mustafa Suleyman, said in a recent post on X that the model would be “coming soon” to the European Union. He added that MAI-Image-1 performs especially well when generating images of food, nature scenes, and visuals that involve artistic lighting or photorealistic detail.
In a blog post, Microsoft said the model is built to deliver both quality and speed. It can handle detailed visuals like light reflection and bounce lighting in a way that rivals larger models, but with faster output. According to the company, this allows users to move from idea to result more quickly and refine their work with fewer delays.
Microsoft emphasized that MAI-Image-1 can be especially useful for users who want to produce realistic images without long waiting times or system slowdowns, which are more common with large-scale models.
The model is also featured in Copilot Audio Expressions, where it helps create images to match AI-generated audio stories. In this “story mode,” users receive both narration and visual content generated by Microsoft’s own systems.
The launch of MAI-Image-1 comes after Microsoft revealed its first internal AI models earlier this year. In August, the company announced MAI-Voice-1, a speech model, and MAI-1-preview, a text-based AI. At the time, Microsoft said it planned to integrate MAI-1-preview into its Copilot assistant, signaling a possible shift away from full reliance on OpenAI technologies.
Even with the introduction of its own models, Microsoft continues to work with partners. Bing’s image-generation tools now list three options: MAI-Image-1, along with OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 and GPT-4o. Meanwhile, Copilot’s chatbot is beginning to use OpenAI’s GPT-5, while also offering users access to models from Anthropic’s Claude family.
Microsoft has not said whether MAI-Image-1 will expand into more products or when it will be widely available outside its current regions.
