The Punjab Assembly on Tuesday passed a resolution directing the closure of all markets and wedding halls across the province by 10 p.m., as part of measures to combat the worsening smog and rising seasonal diseases.
The resolution, presented by treasury lawmaker Fatima Begum, highlighted that deteriorating weather conditions combined with increasing smog levels are severely affecting public health. It stated that limiting business hours would help lower air pollution while also reducing health risks linked to late-night outdoor activities.
The resolution noted that extended commercial operations contribute to overcrowding, which encourages the spread of respiratory and viral infections. It added that early market closures would align with school schedules and ensure the well-being of children, describing the move as both practical and public-friendly.
Earlier, the Lahore district administration had announced new operating hours for markets, restaurants, and cafés. According to the revised schedule, markets will close at 10 p.m. from Monday to Saturday and operate from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays.
Restaurants and cafés will shut at 11 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, and at midnight on weekends, while home delivery services will remain operational until 2 a.m. daily.
