GTA VI Delayed Again – Rockstar Explains the Reasoning Behind the Delay

Rockstar Games has officially delayed the release of Grand Theft Auto VI to November 19, 2026, extending the wait for what is expected to be one of the most anticipated game launches in recent years.

Originally announced with a broader 2025 release window, the game was first postponed to May 2026. The latest delay marks the second shift in launch plans, with Rockstar now confirming the new date through an update posted on its official Newswire and social media platforms.

In the statement, the company said the extra time will help ensure the final product meets the level of polish players expect. “We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realise has been a long wait,” Rockstar said, “but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.”

GTA VI will be the first new mainline entry in the franchise since the release of GTA V in 2013. Set in the fictional state of Leonida — a modern-day reimagining of Vice City, the upcoming title features two lead characters, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. It is expected to bring major upgrades in both gameplay and storytelling, but no further technical details have been released with the new schedule.

Analysts say the delay could impact hardware sales, as many fans were expected to upgrade their consoles ahead of the original release timeframe. With the date now moved closer to the end of 2026, some industry observers believe it may also influence holiday season buying trends.

While delays of this scale are not uncommon in the industry, GTA VI now ranks among the longest development cycles for a major video game, approaching 13 years since its predecessor’s debut. For context, Duke Nukem Forever still holds the record with a 14-year development period from its 1997 announcement to its 2011 release.

Despite the extended timeline, Rockstar’s decision signals a continued focus on quality over speed for the all-time best-seller in the entertainment industry.
