Google Announces Major New Features Coming to Android Phones

Google has begun rolling out its latest Feature Drop for Pixel devices, bringing new tools and improvements to communication, security, and device customization. As always, these features are expected to reach more Android phones outside of Google Pixel devices in the near future.

Remix Photos in Google Messages

With the new update, users can now edit and transform any photo directly in Google Messages using the Remix feature. This tool is powered by Nano Banana, part of Google’s Gemini image generation technology. Both parties in a conversation, regardless of their phone model, can view and remix the same image within the app, including in group chats.

New Theme Packs

Pixel users can now personalize their devices with theme packs based on the film Wicked: For Good. These packs introduce new wallpapers, icons, system sounds, and GIFs. There are three styles to choose from: For Good, Glinda, and Elphaba.

AI Notification Summaries

Pixel phones now summarize lengthy messages in the notification shade. This feature makes it easier to catch up on group chats and long conversations without opening each app. Beginning in December, Pixel devices will also organize and silence low-priority notifications to limit distractions.

It is unclear when this feature will reach other Android phones. It will probably not happen before 2026.

Scam Detection in Notifications

Pixel 6 and newer models in the United States can now identify potential scams in chat app notifications. When the system detects a suspicious message, it shows a “Likely scam” alert, providing an early warning for users.

VIP Contact Updates

The Feature Drop introduces upgrades for managing VIP contacts. Messages from important contacts now receive priority in notifications. A new crisis badge appears for VIPs in the Contacts widget, allowing users to track critical alerts related to those contacts.

Google Photos Upgrade

Google Photos now supports personalized edits. Users can request changes such as removing sunglasses, opening eyes, or improving a smile. The app uses other labeled images in the user’s gallery to make realistic adjustments. This feature is available to eligible Android users in the US.

Google Maps Upgrade

A new Power Saving mode in Google Maps helps extend battery life while navigating. Additionally, a simplified map view focuses on essential information, such as upcoming turns, to conserve power during longer trips.

Google is bringing Scam Detection for phone calls to Pixel 9 and newer models in the UK, Ireland, India, Australia, and Canada. Call Notes, a tool for recording and summarizing phone conversations, is now available in more countries, including Australia, Canada, the UK, Ireland, and Japan.

Magic Cue Improvements

Magic Cue now provides more timely suggestions by using Private AI Compute, Google’s latest cloud-based AI platform. This ensures faster performance while maintaining privacy protections.
