The government has amended the Anti-Riot Act, imposing stricter penalties on individuals who attack or resist police during protests, rallies, or public gatherings. Officials said the changes aim to strengthen law enforcement and maintain public order amid rising unrest.
Authorities can now imprison anyone who assaults or obstructs police officers for up to seven years. Citizens who join mobs or unlawful assemblies that attack law enforcement face fines up to Rs. 500,000. Officials can add one year of imprisonment if the fine remains unpaid.
The amendments classify violence against police during riots or demonstrations as a serious, non-bailable offense. Officials also updated Section 142-A of the Police Order 2002 to clarify definitions and procedures, giving law enforcement clear tools to enforce the law and hold offenders accountable.
The government will set up a compensation fund to support police personnel injured or killed during riots, providing financial assistance to their families. Officials stressed that the reforms focus on protecting officers while preserving citizens’ rights to peaceful protest.
