Sindh Launches Online App to Guide Couples on Family Planning

With an estimated 3.6 million abortions taking place annually in Pakistan, the Sindh Population Welfare Department has introduced a digital platform aimed at providing free and confidential counseling on contraception and reproductive health.

The new mobile application is designed to support couples who hesitate to visit family planning centres due to privacy concerns or societal pressures.

Through the app, users can seek personalized medical advice, learn about modern contraceptive options, and access consultations with qualified healthcare professionals. It also facilitates assistance for those experiencing complications related to family planning.

According to Sindh Population Welfare Secretary Hafeezullah Abbasi, the app was developed in collaboration with the World Bank and Pathfinder International, with approval from Health Minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho. Currently, the platform is undergoing a six-month pilot phase before its full-scale public rollout.

Abbasi emphasized that user confidentiality will be strictly maintained, with secure handling of personal and medical data. The system will also contribute to the department’s electronic data network, improving monitoring and evaluation of reproductive health initiatives across Sindh.

“The app will make it easier for married couples to seek guidance from home without needing to visit centres for minor consultations,” Abbasi said. He added that users can locate nearby family planning clinics by sharing their location, gaining access to details such as available services, clinic hours, and doctor information.

In addition to providing educational material on both short- and long-term contraceptive methods, the app includes a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) and a dedicated helpline. Designed to function offline, it aims to ensure accessibility even in rural or remote areas with limited internet connectivity.
