X Replaces DMs With a Full Blown Messaging App With New Features

X has introduced its long-promised chat platform, replacing its basic DM system with a full messaging experience similar to other major apps. The new update adds voice and video calling, file sharing, and options to edit or delete messages that have already been sent. It also includes several privacy-focused tools, such as end-to-end encryption and alerts when someone screenshots a conversation.

The upgraded messaging experience, now called Chat, is available on iOS and the web. X says the Android version will follow soon. The company also revealed that it is developing a voice memo feature that will allow users to send short audio messages.

Safety Features

X has been previewing the new chat tools for months. Earlier this year, the company released an early version of encrypted messaging but paused it in May to address technical issues. The latest release appears to remove some of those early limitations. According to X’s help center, both group messages and media can now be encrypted. However, metadata, including information about who is receiving the message, remains unencrypted.

The company also acknowledges that it currently does not protect users from man-in-the-middle attacks, which could compromise the security of encrypted chats. X notes that if a bad actor, an internal employee, or a legal order resulted in a conversation being intercepted, neither participant would be notified. The company adds that it is working on tools that will allow users to verify the authenticity of their encrypted conversations.
