Rawalpindi’s infrastructure overhaul is set to expand, as authorities prepare to begin construction on three additional underpasses by late November or early December. In the next phase, work will start on the underpasses planned for Qasim Market, Race Course, and Cheering Cross on Peshawar Road.
Officials said construction on the Rs. 14 billion Kachehri Chowk project, which includes three flyovers, three underpasses, and road expansions, is moving ahead at a rapid pace. Both the Kachehri Chowk project and the newly approved underpasses carry a completion target of June 2026.
The signal-free corridor from Kachehri Chowk to Motorway Chowk is expected to become operational by June or July next year. The C&W Department is supervising the Kachehri Chowk works, while FWO is serving as the contractor.
Work is being carried out around the clock to reduce traffic congestion in a zone that links multiple major roads, including Jinnah Park Road, Rashid Minhas Road, Iftikhar Janjua Road, Mall Road, and Jhelum Road.
Following the completion of underpasses at TM Chowk and GPO Chowk, officials received bids from contractor firms for the new Rs. 7.20 billion package. Tenders will be opened this week, after which contracts will be awarded.
According to the C&W Department, authorities intend to launch the three new underpasses during the ongoing Kachehri Chowk project so that all construction can be completed within the same eight-month timeline.
