Karachi’s new AI-powered traffic enforcement system is generating confusion among motorists as many continue to receive e-challans even after wearing seat belts or helmets.
The system, which began issuing fines on October 27, initially caught thousands of drivers unaware. Since then, compliance has improved across the city, yet many residents say they are still receiving unexpected fines at home.
Talking to a private news channel, DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah explained the reasons behind the continued penalties. He said the automated cameras detect violations beyond basic seat belt and helmet rules, and many riders are missing details they do not realize are mandatory.
For motorcycles, he stressed that both the driver and the passenger must wear helmets. If the passenger rides without one, the system automatically generates a fine, regardless of the driver’s compliance.
The DIG also clarified that front-seat passengers in cars must wear seat belts at all times. The cameras treat an unbelted passenger the same as an unbelted driver, which is why many car owners are still being fined despite using their seat belts correctly.
He further advised online delivery riders to carry an extra helmet for anyone riding with them, noting that failure to provide one will also lead to e-challans.
