Karachi to Upgrade 26 Major Roads Under New Plan

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has finalized a major plan to reduce traffic congestion in the city by rehabilitating more than 26 major roads across multiple districts. The proposal will now be submitted to the provincial government for approval under the Special Karachi Development Grant.

Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab chaired a meeting at the KMC Head Office where officials reviewed key development schemes. They decided to finalize all shortlisted projects and send them forward so work can begin as soon as the government releases funds.

The rehabilitation plan targets Karachi’s most heavily used and neglected corridors. These roads carry thousands of commuters every day but have deteriorated due to long-term congestion, heavy load, and insufficient maintenance. The KMC estimates that road upgrades across the districts will cost Rs. 5.5 billion.

The plan includes major arteries in District Central such as Hashim Raza Road, Shahrah e Usman, Al Amna Avenue, and the stretch connecting Shahrah e Usman to Shahrah e Noor Jahan. In District West, the selected roads include Orangi Link Road, Gulshan e Ghazi, 19 D Road, and roads in Faqir Colony.

In District East, the focus is on routes like Sehba Akhtar Road, Sardar Usman Ali Sabri Road, and Nash Kazmi Road.  District South will see improvements to Garden Road, Mirza Adam Road, and Sarwar Shaheed Road, while District Korangi’s plan includes upgrades to Jinnah Square Road and Liaquat Market Road.

In District Malir, the rehabilitation work will cover Khokar Par Road, Mehran Depot roads, and key nearby connectors.
