Punjab Increases EV Taxi Quota for the Average Man and Woman

The Punjab government has revised its Electric Taxi Scheme and decided to allot 100 electric vehicles to women through balloting, marking the first time female drivers will receive a dedicated quota in the province’s transport initiatives.

Another 200 EV taxis will be allocated to male drivers.

Under the updated formula, the government has also reduced the share of corporate taxi operators from 1,000 to 800 vehicles, increasing the number of EVs available to individual citizens.

Earlier, the plan earmarked only 100 electric taxis for individuals and 1,000 interest-free vehicles for corporate fleet owners.

Punjab Transport Minister said the updated distribution model aims to expand opportunities for the public while strengthening the province’s shift toward eco-friendly mobility.

The electric taxi project announced last year follows global best practices, including China’s EV taxi model. T

he Punjab Transport Department has already begun preliminary work and is in discussions with multiple EV manufacturers.

The Deewan Group and the National Radio & Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) have shown interest in supplying vehicles.

The scheme will roll out in phases, starting from Lahore and divisional headquarters before expanding to major cities across Punjab.

The EV taxis will operate 24/7, providing round-the-clock environmentally friendly transportation options.
